27.4.6.1 In alcuni casi c' è (quasi) nessuna differenza tra gerundio e infinito

L' infinito e il gerundio sono sostantivi verbali in inglese e possono quindi avere la funzione di oggetto o di soggetto. Nei capitoli seguenti discuteremo di quando un infinito può essere sostiuito da un gerundio e di quando invece questo non può succedere.

Con to attempt (tentare), to begin (cominciare), to bother (molestare), to start (cominciare), to cease (stoppare), to continue (continuare), to intend (intendere), to propose (proponere) e cannot bear (non potere sopportare) non c' è nessuna differenza tra gerundio e infinito.

esempio   He attempted repairing his bike alone. He attempted to repair his bike alone.   He started working for a internet company. It started to rain again.   He began reading the book two weeks ago. He began to understand the matter.   They ceased building the house without finishing it. They ceased to build the house without finishing it.   We continue discussing the matter. We continue to discuss the matter.   She intends studying law. She intends to study law.   You propose writing an article. You propose to write an article.
