"Dear little Swallow," said the Prince, "you tell me of marvellous things, but more marvellous than anything is the suffering of men and of women. There is no Mystery so great as Misery. Fly over my city, little Swallow, and tell me what you see there."

"Caro Rondinotto" disse il Principe, "tu mi parli di cose meravigliose, ma più meraviglioso di qualsiasi cosa è il dolore degli uomini e delle donne. Non vi è Mistero più grande della Miseria. Vola sulla mia città, piccolo Rondinotto, e raccontami quello che vedi".

So the Swallow flew over the great city, and saw the rich making merry in their beautiful houses, while the beggars were sitting at the gates. He flew into dark lanes, and saw the white faces of starving children looking out listlessly at the black streets. Under the archway of a bridge two little boys were lying in one another's arms to try and keep themselves warm. "How hungry we are!" they said. "You must not lie here," shouted the Watchman, and they wandered out into the rain.

 Cosi il Rondinotto volò sopra la grande città, e vide i ricchi gozzovigliare nelle loro splendide dimore, mentre i poveri sedevano fuori, ai cancelli. Volò in bui vicoli, e vide i visi bianchi dei bambini affamati che fissavano con occhi assenti le strade oscure.
Sotto l'arcata di un ponte due ragazzini si stringevano l'uno all'altro cercando di riscaldarsi a vicenda.
"Che fame, abbiamo ! " dicevano.
"Non potete dormire laggiù" gridò la guardia, e i due bambini si allontanarono sotto la pioggia.

Then he flew back and told the Prince what he had seen. "I am covered with fine gold," said the Prince, "you must take it off, leaf by leaf, and give it to my poor; the living always think that gold can make them happy."

Allora il Rondinotto tornò indietro e raccontò al Principe quello che aveva veduto.
"Sono tutto ricoperto d'oro fino" disse il Principe, "tu devi togliermelo di dosso, foglia per foglia, e darlo ai miei poveri : i vivi credono che l'oro possa renderli felici".
